New R&B/Soul Albums Releases: June 2008

by admin ·

There were many great R&B/Soul album releases this month including the latest from “neo-soul” (not so new at this point) crooner Dwele.

Dwele’s Sketches Of A Man is being deemed a potential classic by old and new fans and sees him writing, producing, arranging and playing all instruments on nearly all of the tracks. “With my music I try to touch on things that everyone can relate to, Dwele says. “Things like, being a musician and trying to find the balance between work and love.” Listen to Sketches of A Man.

We’ve also got a release from our spotlighted artist Hil St. Soul who recently took the time to talk to us about the emotions behind the music of Black Rose. “For me music is a catharsis,” lead vocalist, Hilary Mwelwa told us. “it’s therapeutic. You go through so much in life. We all experience ups and downs.”

Also new are sets from rock/soul legend Solomon Burke, Anthony David, Ashanti, Lalah Hathaway, and even seminal Brazilian artist Sergio Mendes who again teams with contemporary hip-hop/R&B/pop artists.

New Releases” Silk – Always And Forever

by admin ·

SilkGary “Big G” Glenn, Jonathan “John John” Rasboro, Tim “Timzo” Cameron and Jimmy Gates, otherwise known as Silk, return to their baby-making music ways on their seventh album, Always And Forever, an ode to classic slow jams.

The quartet’s debut release on Shanachie Entertainment drops today and features the foursome known for new-jack swing/hip-hop/R&B jams such as “Freak Me” pimping songs like Switch’s “There Will Never Be,” Michael Jackson’s “Lady In My Life,” Blue Magic’s “Sideshow” and more.

“It all comes full circle on this album,” Gary Glenn shared. “A lot of these songs were ones we were already familiar with so it was easy for us to step in and emulate people we have a lot of respect for.”

Our reviewer thinks they did a good job of presenting the tunes and it seems their fans do, too. More…

Natalie Cole Dazzles The Viper Room

by MCavanaugh ·

Natalie ColeHRS was in the house last night to witness Natalie Cole close up her four-day gig at Sunset Strip’s infamous Viper Room, where she put on a dazzling performance.

“I consider this a dress rehearsal. Cause we’re hitting the big city tomorrow. That’s right, we’re heading to New York City to be on TV,” the eight-time Grammy Award winner told the audience.

Promoting her 20th studio album, Leavin’, due out later this month, Cole opened up with Fiona Apple’s “Criminal.” The album features cover songs from a variety of artists, including Neil Young, Aretha Franklin, Shelby Lynne, Sting, and Kate Bush.

“The songs on my latest album are cover songs, but I hope we perform like you ain’t never heard them before,” exclaimed Cole.

For Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie, who were celebrating their wedding anniversary, Cole took it back with her classic hit “Inseparable.” Following up with the only new track on the album, “5 Minutes Away,” she had everyone dancing and singing along within seconds. Rounding up the evening, she gave an encore performance of a mash-up of “This Will Be An Everlasting Love” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac.”

P. Diddy Presents Danity Kane… again

by admin ·

Danity KaneLast night we attended the Hollyrock listening party for the upcoming self-titled album from Dawn, Aundrea, Aubrey, Shannon and Wanita, set to drop in August. Shee-shee poo-poo appetizers circulated freely while 25 people at any given time waited for the open bar.

An hour after it was supposed to begin (an hour that included the heavy rotation of a number of songs from artists except Danity Kane), P. Diddy rolled in looking fabulously fresh despite the triple digit temperatures outside. Unfortunately the temp was the only hotness last night. While the ladies of the group are attractive and sweet, the music is bland in a watered down Spice Girls sort of way.

They should go far.

Current single, the snap music-like “Show Stopper” is actually pretty decent though. Check it out and tell us what you think. “Show Stopper” Windows | Real
