While anyone can find tons of material that will educate on the life of the great leader, the lessons taught by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are still vitally relevant, especially when applied to hip-hop music, culture and lifestyle.

King spoke of unity and equality for all races, all people. He also demonstrated respect for self and others. While we observe the man’s life and words on this, the first MLK observance since the death of his widow Coretta Scott King, let’s also ask ourselves if we, our lifestyle and music reflect those ideals as well.

In the meantime, check out Common’s performance of “Dream” from the movie Freedom Writers. The song incorporates Dr. King’s message as well as portions of his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
