Lionel Richie Drops New Album, Gets Called Out By The Little Guy

Posted by admin - Filed under: R&B/Soul articles, R&B/Soul audio/video, new R&B/Soul releases - (Tuesday September 12, 2006 at 2:31 pm)

Lionel RichieFresh on the heels of dissing current music, five-time Grammy winner Lionel Richie drops his latest set, Coming Home, today. The follow-up to 2004’s Just For You features production by contemporary producers such as Jermaine Dupri, Raphael Saadiq, Dallas Austin and others. In addition the lead single’s touching video, “I Call It Love,” stars one of pop culture’s most popular reality tv stars, his daughter Nicole Richie.

“Today we’ve learned to celebrate mediocrity,” Richie told the NY Times. “Back in the day we had creative artists; today we have created artists.”

But it seems that even as he poo-poos the current scene, the music legend is benefiting from it.

Upcoming soul artist, Randevyn, recently told us his own thoughts about Richie’s attitude.

“I think we need to be careful of respecting everybody’s art and not saying it sucks because it’s not what we are used to or it’s not what we identify with or it’s not our taste or it’s not what we necessarily care for.”

Take that, oh mighty ex-Commodore, millionaire songwriter.

By the way, Richie’s also hitting the road for the “Coming Home” tour. You can order tickets in advance, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the United Way.

The quote that is being used to say that Richie dissed current r&b is misleading. He also said that if you are complaining about todays’s music it means you are old to which he was pointing at himself. He stated that is how it always is and that music goes in cycles which is as it should be. I understand what he was trying to say that he missed the melodies of old. As for as manufactoring stars he has a point. In the past an artist has time to grow without having to be a star right away. I’m sure there are countless artistz that never got the chance because they were not an immediate star and at this point there is no patience. They were able to me manufactured into immediate stars. Richie also pointed out that there are current r&b artists that he does like. I think with so much hip-hop and rap true r&b got pushed out but there is room for all.

Stop frontin’: Lionel Richie’s right, and ya’ll know it.

Richie is known to contradict himself on many occasions. The truth is that no one is buying his sappy music anymore, and he’s got those alimony and child support payments to keep up. So he felt that he had to do something drastic, even if it meant compromising the things he’s said in the past. That’s selling himself back to the R&B audience he basically dissed years ago to sing boring pop songs. But like I said, that’s Richie - self-serving, money hungry, and willing to do anything to keep from playing on some oldies show…
