New Artist Spotlight: Emily King

Emily KingUp-and-comer Emily King has a lot in common with Alicia Keys.

Both singer/songwriters are native New Yorkers, bi-racial and signed to J Records. Both create songs with substance and both talk about living between worlds and outside of other people’s set boundaries.

“I’m just finding my own culture within myself,” she says. “We have a lot of division in our society, but I was never raised like that. I feel like what I’m doing right now is going to bring a lot of people together.”

With music that can best be described as “soulful, rock-ish, hip-pop/R&B,” King, a lower East Side resident, is prepping to drop her debut album, East Side Story, later this year. The set features lead single “Walk in My Shoes.” The diverse 20-year old was raised by two internationally renowned jazz singers and knew from an early age music would be her destiny.

Citing inspiration from artists such as the Beatles, Nas, Sarah Vaughan, Radiohead, Michael Jackson and Neil Young, the versatile newbie says “Every record that I’ve ever heard has been an influence on me.”
